PORTUGUES COMO LÍNGUA DE HERANÇA

This is a language-cultural project to keep and spread the Brazilian culture in Brisbane, and promote a bilingual identity among the children. Every Brazilian-Australian and Australian interested in the Brazilian language and culture are welcome to participate in our language classes, cultural workshops and events.

About Us

The project "Raizes Brasileiras" provides an enriched learning environment for Australian-Brazilian children and Australian children interested in learning the Portuguese language and Brazilian culture. Coordinated by Dr Lilian Fleuri, Raizes Brazileiras is a project carried on by Brazilian parents and professional teachers interested in promoting a bilingual identity for their children and in maintaining the Portuguese language and Brazilian culture within the Australian-Brazilian community of Brisbane.

Our Offerings

Portuguese as a second language

Learn Portuguese from the beginning

Age: School age children.
This course is designed for children who can't speak and understande Portuguese. For countless reasons, many children from bilingual families don't learn the minority language at home. This course offers an opportunity to start learning Portuguese from scratch, in a fun and interactive environment. Children of non-Brazilian families are very welcome as well.

Portuguese for bilingual children

Develop your oral skills and increase your vocabulary, while learning how to read and write in Portuguese.

Age: 5 to 9 year-old
Here we focus on reading and writing, while playing and having a lot of fun. Children are encoraged to interact exclusively in Portuguese, proposing, creating and critically discussing several subjects. The teacher enhance the bilingual identity among the group, while motivating the exclusive use of Portuguese.

Adult classes

Improve your communicative skills in Portuguese

Dive right into class with one of our expert teachers. Rather than just listening, memorizing, and repeating facts, this class has students interacting, and communicating in real life in Portuguese. Our goal as educators is to spur our students’ curiosity, and allow them to learn at their own pace.

Portuguese for IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is for students aged 16-19.

In 2017 and 2018 we have a group studing Portuguese as a Language B (High Level) for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. If you are already fluent in Portuguese and want take Portuguese language as the "Language Acquisition", you can choose to join this group.  subject as a HL  credited for the

All children will need to do a language assessment before enrolling in our courses.
Children and adults from every cultural backgroud are welcome to the classes.

Methodology and Inspirations

Inspiration

Projeto Raízes Brasileiras is inspired in the initiative taken by many Brazilian parents and teachers around the world, willing to pass to young generation Brazilian culture and language. Existing groups as BREACC (London), Clude dos Brasileirinhos (England), ABRIR, among others, prove that it is possible to unite the community and build an important project for our children to keep with their bilingual identity, valueing their cultural and linguistic backgroud. 

O Projeto Raízes Brasileiras recebeu inspirações de várias inicitivas de promoção e manutenção da língua portuguesa e cultura brasileira em comunidades ao redor do mundo. Iniciativas como BREACC (Londres), Clube dos Brasileirinhos (Inglaterra), ABRIR, entre outros, mostram que sim é possível unir forças e muita vontade e construir algo de suma importância na vida de nossos filhos: uma identidade bilingues de valorização de suas raízes culturais e linguísticas.

The development of Projeto Raízes Brasileiras

For the whole year of 2016, teacher Lilian (coordinator of Projeto Raízes Brasileiras) developed an experimental work of Portuguese speech motivation and valorization of the children's bilingual identity. It was initiated some activities of literacy in Portuguese. This group kept united and commited to the classes for the whole year, and the results where positively perceptive.

In 2017, the project, more structured, incorporated other professional teachers. It has 2 groups, one for portuguese as a second language and another for teaching portuguese as a heritage language, both respecting the literacy level of each student.

Methodology and material

O Projeto Trilhas, vinculado ao Instituto Natura, propõe um método de letramento e alfabetização a partir da leitura. Partindo de um livro, as crianças exploram diversas questões culturais, linguísticas, matemáticas, científicas e de cidadania, valorizando o pensamenteo lógico, criativo, colaborativo e propositivo. É um método que valoriza o aluno em toda sua complexidade e o grupo e suas redes de interações. Esse método é adotado pelo Projeto Raízes Brasileiras no ano de 2017.
